5/14/2020

Today I want to workout.

But I don't really want to jump up and down.
Or go outside. Or get too, too sweaty.

And I want to have an excuse to have a favorite show on in the background without feeling 'guilty' (anyone? just me?).

CHECK.

Oh, and I just want to work my lower body.

Oh oh, and just a short workout.

Too much to ask for?
NO!  I got you:
CHECK!

See below for this 18-minute lower body workout pulled from a full Pilates class to lengthen and strengthen without getting up off the ground!

Remember, every bit counts!

Looking back, Looking forward

For as much reading and writing as I have been doing personally each day, cue the 'I don't know what to write' for a blog post this week!

So what did I do?  Looked through the collection of quotes I have saved over the years...

And was immediately inspired.

Picture
^One of the first I came across.

Darn timely, huh?

We might be in the middle of what feels like a country completely falling apart, but GOOD THINGS WILL COME.  I don't know how long it will take, no one does. I don't know how much pain we will all go through to get there, no one does.  But eventually, eventually, we will be back to whatever 'normal' becomes-- and here's hoping and praying that new normal is BETTER, STRONGER, and KINDER to ourselves, each other, and the Earth.

A life is made up of all moments.  A good life tries to put the happy moments at the forefront of memories.  We all have varying levels of sad moments.  Sometimes it is hard to bring the happy moments to the surface.   But go ahead and write down any and all you can think of right now.

Go ahead.

And when you are done, smile. Then perhaps go make up another happy moment:
Go for a walk.
Tell someone you love them.
Pet your dog.
Watch a happy story on YouTube.
Read Betty White quotes.
Lie outside and breathe.
Read a great book.

Want to share?  I'd love to hear!

Jane Fonda, Longevity

4/27/2020

Picture
Jane Fonda is 82, stars in a sitcom, runs two foundations, and has a history of stage, screen, and fitness that is too long to list in one sitting!

If you want a history lesson on her, click here.

But what I want to focus on are two things here:  Perseverance and Staying Active.

From the 1960s on, Fonda grew in her career as an actress and fitness professional.

Yet at one point, according to the above link's cited interview, Fonda was ''effectively blacklisted'' from Hollywood due to political opinions and activity.  Did that stop her? NO.  Did she say, 'they hate me, my career is over.'? NO.  Mother's suicide, her own eating disorder, non-stop media.  Did any of this stop her? NO.  She has gone through multiple divorces.  Did these stop her?  NO.  Breast cancer.  Did she stop?  NO.

Fast forward to 2005, and she is co-founding Women's Media Center, while already having been deeply involved in charitable work for decades.  The Fonda Family Foundation and Jane Fonda Foundation both support many ventures today as well.  In 2015 she stars in Grace & Frankie on Netflix, which becomes a HIT show and has run seven seasons.  Jane Fonda is 82 years old and starring in a show!

What an awesome example of PERSEVERANCE.  And I am just giving you a snapshot into this woman's long and wild life and career.  This is not about being born into affluence and connections, so beyond that.  I don't claim to be an expert about Jane Fonda, but even just these few details help show how one person can keep forging ahead, and how one never knows what is next on the horizon...

How did I end up talking about Jane Fonda today?
Tthis morning, I decided to scour YouTube for a cardio video to do for my workout.  **Advanced Tae Bo-- man. I'm telling you--always can count on those videos for a solid workout.  Yes it may look a bit 'dated' thanks to the 90s styles, but who cares?  Those videos work you out!**  On the sidebar, I notice "Jane Fonda Exercise Challenge".

Guys, it is a great video.

Why is it that so often we associate 'old' videos with being 'sub par'?  Sure, there are plenty of advancements in the fitness world and there are a lot of much stronger resources today--
But, I'm watching this video thinking, I have literally been to a class that normally charges $40 for 55 minutes of exactly what is happening on her video right now.  I won't name the class, but it is THIS.  Jumping around cardio for the bulk of the workout, with slower toning in between, no weights, all to the beat of the songs...

Jane knew what was UP in the 80s.  Want to change up your workout this week and have a fun blast-from-the-past of 80s do's and wears, watch the below YouTube video.  Thanks, Jane Fonda!

She is an excellent example of the importance of STAYING ACTIVE.  A life-long mover, she incorporating fitness into her world...No, not a professional athlete or competitive X, Y, or Z, just MOVING.  Moving safely. Moving consistently. Moving throughout her life.
And look at this lady now, STILL moving and shaking at 82 years old!

"An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion..."
-Newton's First Law of Motion

We find inspiration in the most unlikely of places.  Today, what did I find in the random pop-up on the side of my YouTube page...Inspiration!

Keep persevering in what you want in life, and keep your body moving to help you get there.  Keep your eyes and heart open for motivation-- both mental and physical.

Don't know about you, but I would not have guessed Jane Fonda's Workout was the answer for this particular morning!

NB:
To circle back to our meditation challenge week a few months back:

Shape magazine asked Fonda, 'What advice would you give your 30 year-old self?'  Fonda replied: "I would have wanted to learn to meditate earlier. I think it would have kept me out of some trouble! ...I’ve felt my confidence beginning to go and so I got back into meditating again—I’d been so busy I stopped—and the minute I started meditating again, everything got better. I wish everyone would do it. I can’t pretend that it’s easy to still your mind; it’s not easy. But it’s like riding a bike. You can’t, you can’t, you can’t and then you can. You have to just keep doing it. Don’t give up; it takes time!"

Picture
"It's never too late - never too late to start over, never too late to be happy."

Have a great day,

Maximize Your Workout Time: Cardio Express

4/17/2020

Okay, I know this category is 'Health I A Sec', and this is certainly a bit longer-- BUT 30 minutes out of a 24-hour day is not much, and this workout will leave you with heart pumping and legs fired up!

You don't need to spend an hour+ each day working out to see results. Nope.

Advanced Body Weight Cardio Express
*Lower Body Focus*

NOTES:

MOVE. SAFELY.
^our key points for this workout. I don't explain that much here, this is a follow-along. I'm excited you are joining me!
At your own pace, body weight only, advanced lower body/cardio bootcamp.
If you are a 'beginner', you can absolutely do this! But, you will need to modify as much as desired....not sure how to change a specific exercise? Fill in with something of your choosing.
This workout isn't so much about what exercise you are doing at a given time-- it's that you are here and moving. Safely of course! FORM and LISTENING to your body.. Change things as needed, breathe, step touch or march in place at any time.
Check your area so you don't hit anything :) If you don't have much room, just keep everything more contained.

The Mental Part: Nike Run Club

RUNNING ON EMPTY WITH HEADSPACE

Wanted to recommend this guided run today, as it was just what I needed on my Easter morning run yesterday and hopefully you can put it in your back pocket to use when it can be of help to you, too.

How often is it the thought of the task ahead that is worse than the actual doing of the task?

How often do we not feel like working out but are thrilled with the feeling we have when we have accomplished it?

I can teach four bootcamp classes in a day and go to auditions in between---But tell me to run for twenty minutes and the task seems HUGE.  We all have our strong suits ;)

Yesterday, I knew physically I could do a run.  But mentally I 'just didn't feel like it'.  Classic.

As I looked through what to listen to on my run, this popped up-- Running on Empty from the Nike Run Club app I use to track when I run.

My plan was 'at least run for ten minutes' then walk.

Well then the Nike coaches got in my head, which translated to my feet, and I kept going.

By the time I hit 20, and the whole Guided Run was 32 minutes, I was thinking to myself, I have to share this with people.  Well then I couldn't cop out at 20, I needed to finish the run.

Maybe for you it is a walk, or a bike ride, or an online class.  Whatever your exercise of choice, before stopping early ask yourself:  is my body needing to stop, or is it my mind wanting to stop?

(Some quick workout ideas here.)

"Daily Accomplishments"

DAILY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

4/2/2020
“Read about kids’ shows”
“Comment on a casting director’s Tweet”
“Edit video of me singing”
“Share happy thoughts on Twitter”
“Submissions”
“Film, edit, submit video for Conde Nast posting”
“10 minutes of ballet barre”
“Zoom call on self-tapes”

^This is the list I keep daily.  It is many pages long now in Google Docs, thanks to starting it many, many months ago-- and I am so glad I started it indeed.

As a performer and personal trainer, my days are not scheduled like they would be if I had a set boss, a set office, a set schedule...

The majority of my time is a ‘’choose your own adventure” format.  Anyone who has been any version of self-employed understands the many pros and cons of this set-up!

More me, the over-arching challenges presented each day are staying focused, prioritizing, moving forward through what sometimes feels like a black hole of ‘where the heck do I go next’ in the on-camera world, while finding the balance of saying ’yes’ to the right amount of clients and classes in fitness to thrive but not collapse at the end of a day ;)

Anyway, this post does not have to go on very long today-- The point is, right now, especially, so many of us are facing a similar “choose your own adventure” calendar.  If you are up for creating a DAILY ACCOMPLISHMENTS doc, I highly recommend it.

Yes I have my running to-do list, but this is a way for me to quickly jot down what I actually complete, however small, during a day
that relates to moving forward in my career.  Maybe you want to put everything you do in a day.  That would overwhelm me, but more power to you if that is the route you go ;)

Go ahead, open Google docs, type today's date, and write some accomplishments.

What constitutes an 'accomplishment''?  That's up to you.  But I urge you to count every 'little' thing that moves you that tiny step forward.

I don’t know about you, but it certainly makes me feel better when I can look back at that and say, “YES I AM doing things!”  Some days it feels I am stagnant, and this helps me keep track of the reasons to celebrate, of all sizes, those baby steps forward.

"Wrote a blog post."  That’s going on the list :)

What other ways do you have of staying focused and motivated these days??

Grit & Resilience, thoughts from a Navy SEAL

4/1/2020

"A Navy SEAL Explains 8 Secrets To Grit And Resilience"
This article is SO quotable!

Had to share for some inspiration.

Posting bits here, but I recommend reading the article in full!  It combines research and thoughts on the topic of RESILIENCE.

In summary, the article covers: "So what can the SEALs and research teach you about getting through life’s tough times? Here we go."

Some gems:

PURPOSE

" Grit often comes from a place of deep purpose and personal meaning."  Tasks need to have purpose, as they note: "our brains always give in long before our body does."

Intrinsic goals outperform External goals

GAME

Something that helps to keep one going ''in the moment''?  Making it a game!
"
  • What’s one of the things people who live through disaster scenarios have in common? They make survival a game.
  • Happiness expert Shawn Achor said the best way to deal with stress is to see problems as challenges, not threats.
  • Kids do better in school when it’s treated like a game."

CONFIDENCE

"Research has shown that hope and despair can be self-fulfilling prophecies.

(For the three things you can learn about fearlessness from Special Ops and Navy SEALs, click here.)"

PREPARE

"Marathons aren’t as hard after a few months of training. But if I said you had to run one tomorrow you’d probably cry."

IMPROVEMENT

"When you frame things as a win/lose scenario and they don’t go well, you’re a loser. And so you quit.
When you take the perspective that everything is a learning experience, there are no winners or losers. And you just keep getting better."

"Gritty people often start out less talented. But by hard work they end up better than the naturally gifted:"

HELP

"As The Power of Habit author Charles Duhigg explained, having a support network is vital to improvement. Seeing others achieve goals makes us believe we can."

CELEBRATE

"Lots of little good things beat infrequent great things
when it comes to how good we feel."

HUMOR

"
There’s something about when you’re facing a really crummy situation, to look over at your friend and see him smile. It tells you, “Alright, I’m going to be fine. We’re going to be fine and it’s all going to work out.”"

-don't push too much! be nice to your back, help it don't hurt it. these won't be the most intense exercises you ever do, but they are important and powerful for your back!

'Boredom'? Or something else?

3/27/2020

Stir crazy? Sure, it happens.  Boredom? I don’t know...really? There is so much to do, read, watch, and learn in this world, how could one ever be bored?

Paralysis from the unknown, Not knowing where to start, Overwhelmed, Tired, Unmotivated …
Ask yourself what it really is.

Is it really boredom? Or is it that there are indeed plenty of books available to read, work to start on, documentaries to watch, or push ups to do, and it is one of these other ‘things’?

First step is to identify the ‘why’ of these feelings. Then you can move forward…

Stir crazy- perhaps a walk will do you good.  You know what you can be doing, it’s just that you are going nuts stuck in the same place.  Leave it. Go walk, breathe, drink some water, then come back.

Tired- take a nap. Give yourself a break. Have a huge glass of water, ideally with electrolytes (Nuun is a personal favorite, but if you have others, lmk!)  Think about how you have (or have not) been sleeping. What can you do to help this?  Resources here.
If it is ‘un-motivation’ that is making you feel tired despite great sleep… try that walk, a fitness class (so many free online-- I’m doing Pilates T & F weekly at 12pm est if you’d like to join in on FB live), watch a Youtube video that motivates.

Not knowing where to start and/or Overwhelmed- write down everything you can think of on a list. Don’t worry about an item being ‘right’ or how big or small it is, just put everything down.
Then do 20 jumping jacks, 20 push-ups, just step away from the list a minute.
Then go back-- New list: What from the first list really needs (or you have a burning desire) to be done in the next month.
Take a minute away (or however long)
Then go back-- New list: What are the top two items on this list that are the most pressing and important.
One more item: what is the most fun/the item you are looking most forward to?
Now you have just three items.
Try starting a ‘hard’ task first. Put on a timer for 25 minutes (thanks to Barbara Barna Abel for this great tip).  Attack just that for 25 minutes. 25 minutes. That’s all you have to commit to!  If you go longer, awesome. If not, no worries-- you still got a solid start on that task. Then go ahead and do the ‘fun’ task next.

Paralysis from unknown-- that’s a heavier one, but look at the above suggestions.  All three points have actionable items to help your mind and mood. Try any or all and see if it helps in even the slightest. I strongly believe it will.  There are also so many resources for stress and anxiety relief to be found online for free.
Some favorites:
    -Insight Timer
-Yoga for Anxiety & Stress Relief: Yoga with Adrienne has a bunch of great videos
-Talk to someone. Call a friend, a therapist, someone positive.
    -Online resources:
    https://www.mentalhelp.net/blogs/online-tools-for-managing-stress/
    https://blog.worldcampus.psu.edu/dealing-stress-helpful-resources-strategies/

ALWAYS find gratitude.  Despite any and all negatives, there always positives somewhere.

If this post helps even one person find more joy and contentment during this time, then it has been worth writing.
Sending love, Kate

P.S. Try this easy challenge. Granted we are not physically around people right now, but a phone call, text, card, smile all go a long way :)

Who Doesn't Love Betty White?

3/25/2020

Picture
Extra smiles are always needed.  But especially in the current climate.
Enjoy the following from goalcast.com ;)

  • If one has no sense of humor, one is in trouble.
  • There’s no formula. Keep busy with your work and your life. You can’t become a professional mourner. It doesn’t help you or others. Replay the good times. Be grateful for the years you had.
  • I just laugh. Have I got them fooled.
  • Get at least eight hours of beauty sleep, nine if you’re ugly.
  • I like those touches of chivalry that are fast disappearing. If I sound old-fashioned, it’s because I’m as old as I am! But it’s just polite.
  • People say, ‘But Betty, Facebook is a great way to connect with old friends.’ Well, at my age, if I want to connect with old friends I need a Ouija board.
  • Mind your own business, take care of your affairs, and don’t worry about other people so much.
  • Friendship takes time and energy if it’s going to work. You can luck into something great, but it doesn’t last if you don’t give it proper appreciation.
  • It is important that you not believe your own publicity. Be grateful for whatever praise you receive, but take it with a grain of salt.
  • So you may not be as fast on your feet, and the image in your mirror may be a little disappointing, but if you are still functioning and not in pain, gratitude should be the name of the game.

Move Your Body: Office Edition

3/21/2020

While this video can be beneficial for anyone who works in an office setting at anytime, I was inspired today by those of you who have to still show up at an office now.  Now, when stress levels are extra high nationwide, a sense of unknown surrounds us, and we could all use every little bit of immunity-boosting efforts we can make.

The video above is a short and hopefully straightforward way to wake up your body during your work day. About ten minutes long, you won't sweat, don't worry, but you will get those muscles moving and go back to that computer with a bit more energy.
Special focus on your back and neck.

Shot from my living room...because these are the times!

Enjoy, and if you have any questions at all, just let me know!

The Starfish Story, a wonderful reminder

3/11/2020

The Starfish Story

A young man is walking along the ocean and sees a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have washed ashore.

Further along he sees an old man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean.

“Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?,” he asks.“Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them further in they will die.”

“But, old man, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it! You can’t possibly save them all, you can’t even save one-tenth of them. In fact, even if you work all day, your efforts won’t make any difference at all.”

The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea.

“It made a difference to that one.”

Make a difference in a small way, every day.  To yourself, to those you encounter.

It doesn't have to be a giant event.  A smile, an honest 'how are you?' and waiting for an answer, holding a door, helping someone carry something, offering to bring dinner to someone, a coffee date with a friend who is struggling, signing up for the work volunteer event....

For yourself-- choosing a healthier meal option, taking a deep breath (or 10), carving out a half hour for a workout, taking a fun class, treating yourself to a glass of wine with your favorite people....

What are your favorite ways to make a difference, both to those around you and yourself?

Thanks for reading,
Kate

Listen While You Work(out): Oprah's SuperSoul Conversations

What:

According to the official about:
"Awaken, discover and connect to the deeper meaning of the world around you with SuperSoul. Hear Oprah’s personal selection of her interviews with thought-leaders, best-selling authors, spiritual luminaries, as well as health and wellness experts. All designed to light you up, guide you through life’s big questions and help bring you one step closer to your best self."

My version:
A library jam-packed with stories and thoughts to lift you up.

Why:

I came across an episode on Dwayne Johnson, the Rock, and listened one day.  I felt so motivated.  To get where he is despite the challenges along the way... great listen.  He seems like an all-around positive person, too, which I always appreciate.  Then started to explore who else Oprah interviewed on this series....so many!  There is an episode on the Five Love Languages, one with Malcolm Gladwell about Talking to Strangers, one on accepting 'Troubled Times' with Eckhart Tolle....the list goes on and on!

Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, and Tina Fey, My Life in Focus, are all on my 'listen next' list.

Where to find:

- Stitcher, a free podcast app
- iTunes
- YouTube
- Just plain 'Google it', and you'll find options!

Some quotes from episodes:

“When you see the child in others it gives you permission to see the child in yourself and creates space for real transformation.”  Shaka Senghor

"We can't ask people to give to us something that we do not believe we're worthy of receiving."  Brene Brown

"I define happiness as the joy you feel growing toward your potential."  Shawn Achor

I have no time, Help me eat: Home Edition

2/27/2020

Continuation from my previous post on health(ier) options when in transit for eating.

You are home, hooray! But you are not about to spend the next hour plus making dinner when you have finally gotten the chance to have a moment at home after a busy day.
Or perhaps it is morning, and you just are not that ‘morning person’ some people are and have ten minutes before you have to leave to catch your train.  Have small children and therefore no time, period? So many situations today where we are pressed for time and want to just grab the quickest option to eat-- not necessarily the healthiest...

Here are some quick tips & tricks to both getting healthier food into the home and choosing healthier options when eating:

-Planning on the go

-Have a notepad on your phone? Yes, I know you do.  Keep a tab for the grocery store so you can add to it as things pop into your mind, rather than trying to figure it out when in the large and crowded store when you are already tired and hungry.

  • Less of a chance of forgetting if you add to it throughout the days, and a much faster stop at the store with everything already written down.

-If you are in a city and walking past many grocery stores, note what has better prices for what.  I tend to look at Food Emporium for their weekly sales, Whole Foods for frozen fruits and vegetables, and Amish Market and Stiles for fresh fruits like apples and bananas.  If I didn’t pay attention to these things and just went to the closest store to my apartment, I would be spending a fortune!

  • Also to my city dwellers, Whole Foods offers free delivery through Amazon Prime if you want to stock up on the less expensive options and not lug them 20+ blocks ;)

-Healthy options on hand

-I have heard the comment, ‘but I can’t eat fruits and vegetables fast enough and have to throw them out’.  FIX: frozen foods.
  • Often less expensive, and they do not go bad in a matter of days.  Also, frozen foods are picked at a prime time, so you get maximum flavor.
  • Check the frozen aisles at your grocery stores.  I know for me, Whole Foods offers the best mix of cost and quality for frozen foods (‘whole paycheck’ no longer!).
16oz strawberries frozen: $1.99 at Whole Foods (similar at Trader Joe's)
16oz organic spinach frozen: $2.29 at Whole Foods (" ")

-’Making a balanced meal takes too long.’  No way.
There are tons of recipes offered on the subject, but here is my go-to trick to maximize health and time:
  • Take out a big pan, bit of water and/or olive oil, toss on any frozen vegetables you want.
  • Grab a can of tuna, or throw a piece of grilled chicken on another pan and cook it. (Or I choose eggs a lot of the time for a scramble.)
  • While waiting, clean a sweet potato, carefully put some slits on top, put it in the microwave on ‘potato’ setting.
  • Add some spices of your choosing to the veggie mix.
  • Mix in protein of choosing when vegetables are cooked.
  • Pour onto plate
  • Top with balsamic vinegar and parmesan cheese.  Have avocado? Slice that on top, too.

  • Boom. Less than ten minutes, and you have a healthy meal.

  • What vegetables?  Seriously, whatever you like.  My ‘most-used’ are spinach, asparagus, and peppers….sometimes brussel sprouts, peas, mushrooms, whatever you have.

-Other quick ways to prep meals:
  • Crock pot-- in less than two minutes, throw in protein, chicken stock, spices, and vegetables.  Hours later, without any effort on your part, you have a meal. Tons of recipes online.
  • Make chicken or turkey in bulk and save to grab quickly
  • Sweet potato in the microwave topped with anything: turkey mixed with tomato sauce, chickpeas and olive oil, mustard, hummus, avocado and sliced chicken, balsamic glaze, chopped up with scrambled eggs
  • Make a soup, freeze in portioned out bags to have on hand
  • My favorite morning (or anytime of day really) protein & veggie snack to make quickly: recipe here.  I estimate the veggies, no need to spend extra minutes trying to be exact here.

-Snacks for ‘in-between times’:
  • Slice an apple, 1-2 Tbsp almond butter with it
  • Celery or carrots with hummus ( note serving size for hummus)
  • Mix raisins, almonds, walnuts together for a healthy trail mix (note your portions)
  • Smoothie: unsweetened almond milk, frozen blueberries & pineapple, pea protein powder, spinach, and BLEND
  • Make a batch of grilled chicken to have a slice of with mustard when desired (great source of protein!)
  • Plain Greek yogurt with blueberries and almonds
  • Healthier processed snacking:
            Ba da bean
            RX Bar (½ or whole)
            KIND bar minis
Rice cracker with smashed avocado or almond butter or jelly
            Quinoa puffs

Will continue to add on here, but time to go teach!  If you have any favorite tips you'd like to share, comment below!

Daily Dose Challenge: Week Four

2/24/2020

"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."

-Aesop-

This week's challenge is to make a stranger's day better each day.

So simple yet so meaningful.  The simplest gesture can turn someone's day around.
This is the first of the weekly challenges that is outside of 'me'....it is about someone else.  Do we benefit from making someone's day brighter?  Oh yes!

See how much better YOU feel after you:
help someone with a door,
compliment her necklace,
truly listen with a smile after saying 'how are you today?',
hand a homeless man a meal,
bring your wife flowers,
make cookies for an unsuspecting recipient...

Hope you are joining me this week.  Let me know how it is going and what new insights you may be finding.  I'll check back in this weekend :)

...

It's the weekend...

Having the extra 'push' in the back of my head to be extra kind to a stranger turned into trying to see how many people I could give an extra hello or compliment to each day.  I loved it, and it was especially great to have the push to focus on something outside of myself.  Yes, I feel good when I help someone, but it is not about me, it's about them.  By helping others, we end up helping ourselves, too. Win-win.
